It is strongly recommended to AVOID the use of cotton swabs (Q-Tips) or auriculi (small wooden hook to scour the ears). Although it feels removing wax, these tools are more likely to
push wax down the ear canal and cause clogs. It can then compact the wax already present and make it very difficult to remove during a later procedure.
It is recommended to apply 3 to 5 drops of a neutral oil* weekly to prevent the wax from drying out. The ear canal is rinsed by letting the clean water of the shower run gently around the ear canal. Never use the shower jet directly towards the ear canal.
When you get out of the shower, wipe the entrance to the ear canal with a clean towel or a facial tissue (Kleenex).
Note that the use of ear candles is to be avoided. Health Canada states that "it is illegal to sell or import ear candles for medical purposes in Canada and the United States". Many injuries are associated with their use.
*Cerumenolytic products: olive oil, sweet almond oil or mineral oil applied with a clean dropper or any other product sold in pharmacies designed for this purpose.
Procedure
The procedure below makes the cerumen (ear wax) softer, making it easier to clean and reducing the risk of discomfort. It does not remove earwax.
Follow the steps described below during the days leading us to your appointment:
N.B. In case of tympanic perforation, this procedure is contraindicated. In the case of ear surgery, this procedure may be contraindicated. Please check with your audiologist.
