Tube Verification

The Check-Up That Makes All the Difference!

The lifespan of tympanostomy tubes varies from one individual to another. Checking their patency is a simple, painless procedure that is necessary to ensure they are functioning properly. This service is offered for clients of all ages, and the professional team at Audio Logique clinics is equipped to provide this service quickly.

Our Approach:

  • In-person appointment lasting 15 to 30 minutes;
  • Otoscopy (visual examination of the ear and observation of the tubes);
  • Video otoscopy if deemed necessary by the professional in order to take pictures of the tubes. This step allows us to send photographs to the treating ENT doctor;
  • Tympanometry: this test allows us to objectively document the functioning of a tube;
  • Referral to the treating ENT doctor if the condition of the middle ear is not optimal, if the tube is non-functional, or if it has fallen out;
  • Follow-up every 6 months for verification as recommended by ENT and pediatric associations in Canada and the United States.

Why conduct a tube verification?

  • To ensure proper functioning: The tubes are placed to help drain fluid from the middle ear, promote adequate ventilation, and/or improve hearing. Verification ensures that they are still in place and not obstructed.
  • To monitor the condition of the eardrum: In the presence of patent tubes, we ensure there is no recurrence of fluid or inadequate pressure in the middle ear. If a tube has fallen out, the team checks that the eardrum has healed properly and there are no remaining perforations.
  • To detect complications: Hearing loss or the return of initial symptoms may indicate complications or malfunctioning tubes.

When should we proceed with tube verification?

  • Tube verification is suggested every 6 months until they fall out and the eardrum is closed;
  • It is relevant to check them after an infectious episode or ear discharge.
